Editorial August 2024

A little business first

Each month, we try something different with the newspaper to make sure we have content that adds value to the community. We are actively looking for people in the community to write articles about what is happening and share stories and achievements. Don’t worry about perfecting it; we will help you convert it into newspaper speak.

If you feel something is missing, please let us know. We need more local sports information. If someone can take a photo and send us some results of a local game or local team, that would be wonderful!

A request: As we print on high-quality A3 paper because people tell us they keep these and want it to last. This is costly, but we think worth it, but the sponsored adverts just cover the printing costs. If you are connected with a business in the area, ask them to sponsor an advert in your local paper and offer to write an article about the business for us to share. Prices start at $95 to promote the business all over the Coast and online for a month.

And a short commentary next

There’s a theme of supporting and educating in this fresh winter month’s paper. How exciting to have a wildlife animal hospital right here in our council! When we went as a family to Wings Wildlife Park we were amazed at just how many animals and the variety that were there. Did you know you can camp there too? It became a really memorable experience for our young family.

Every August there’s a celebration of Science with the National Science week, and how lucky we are to have HIVE offering a variety of activities, a touring Space Show at the Ulverstone Library, and a Mini MakerX event at the newly reopened Cradle Coast Campus. One of the draw points when choosing where we would live was HIVE. The idea that a region cared so much about additional educational opportunities enough to make an entire centre for it was a big factor.

The active U3A group here is inspiring as well with so many different classes on offer, join U3A to learn something new and be amongst soon-to-be friends.

May you have a warm and inspired August, Jennifer

In this midwinter edition with the dry weather giving way to black ice on many of our roads, the mood shifts indoors, and I for one have been keeping warm. I look forward to the interesting line up hosted by U3A, the Library’s encouragement to reading books or finding your roots as celebrated by the National Family History Week.

The minus temperatures have produced some beautiful clear days along our coast. The refurbished UTas campus at Burnie has invested in the National Science Week. The Week activities are well supported by the Hive including Star Gazing, the Planetarium Program and Science Expo.

Of interest to readers, our section on Community Notes features diverse activities, which we hope will encourage other groups to forward reports of their activities.
