Alarming Rise in Cases Demands Urgent Action

In Tasmania, the percentage of young people experiencing a mental health problem has significantly increased from 10.6% in 2012 to 18.8% in 2018 (ABS 2018). Tasmania’s rate of youth suicide is higher than the national average (ABS 2022), with approximately 50% of mental disorders often occurring before the age 25. 

Here on the Northwest Coast of Tasmania, the number of young people accessing mental health services has more than doubled in recent years, which demonstrates a clear need for more support. 

Early intervention is key, and as parents, caregivers, educators and supportive community members, we all have a part to play, in providing advice and support for our younger generation. 

Understanding the signs of mental health problems is crucial for early intervention, and there are some indicators that a young person may be experiencing a mental health problem:

* Persistent sadness or mood swings.
* Social Withdrawal from friends and family.
* Noticeable changes in behaviour, such as increased irritability, reckless behaviour, or sudden academic decline.
* Sleep and appetite changes.
* Difficulty with concentrating or decision-making that impact daily functioning.

What to Do Next to Seek Help

If you or someone you know is exhibiting these signs, it’s essential to seek help promptly. Early intervention can make a significant difference in managing and overcoming mental health problems. Here are some steps to take:

* Reach out to your GP who can provide guidance and support tailored to individual needs.
* Utilise school resources such as their counsellor, chaplain or social worker.
* Engage in community support organisations such as Headspace or Beyond Blue
* Promote open dialogue: Encourage open conversations about mental health within families and communities to reduce stigma and foster a supportive environment.
* Seek immediate help if necessary: In cases of crisis or immediate danger, contact emergency services or a crisis hotline without delay.

Addressing mental health problems early can prevent severity improve overall well-being. With increased awareness and accessible support, we can work together to support our youth and create a healthier future for Tasmania.
