Local Basketball Star Shoots for Success at Nationals – Harriet Close

Ulverstone basketball player, Harriet Close, is set to represent Tasmania at the National Championships in Brisbane this year. Having first picked up a ball at the age of five with the Ulverstone Red Hoppers, Harriet’s dedication and talent have propelled her to state level.

Originally from the UK, she found basketball a fantastic way to connect with her new community after her family’s move to Tasmania. Inspired by her sister, she joined the Hoppers and has been a dedicated player ever since, also participating in the Basketball Tasmania Future Development Program.

“I enjoy the teamwork and the friends I have made,” she says. Basketball has also opened doors to travel, competing in tournaments across Australia.

The selection process for the State Team can be nerve-wracking, Having previously been a reserve player, she understands the disappointment of missing out. However, her hard work paid off this year, earning her a spot on the U18s team. “It’s a massive feeling of relief,” she shared

“It is exciting to represent my state,” she says. “Wearing the uniform kind of shows that you have worked hard to earn a place in the team.”

Looking ahead to the Nationals in Brisbane, Harriet is excited for the special atmosphere of the opening ceremony. Having previously competed at the U16s Nationals in Perth, she knows what to expect. She credits her supportive family and the excellent coaching she has received, from coaches at the Ulverstone Red Hoppers to those at Basketball Tasmania. “I am very fortunate to live here,” she says, “Ulverstone offers a really good basketball program; I wouldn’t change a thing.”
