Penguinite, Paul Wakim, is on an art journey, which reflects the seasons of his life. Moving from a darker period in his youth battling depression, his art was darker, abstract and more surreal. Today, it has more colour, and his inspiration comes from nature and our beautiful Tassie landscape. This watercolour below depicting a “Superb Wren on a Waratah’ resulted from his observations in his own backyard. Emotions, experiences, his spiritual journey and how he sees life are reflected in his creations.
Wakim says Art “helps bring calm, is therapeutic, allows people to interact on a deeper level and can challenge the status quo. It is highly subjective, and I rely on intuition. There’s nothing I’m afraid of trying – with art, fear is your enemy. Art is like chess – my mind is 3 moves ahead in the creative process, and sometimes I lose. I’ve explored varied mediums such as oil paintings, charcoal drawings, portraits and watercolours on timber. I like to make my work as accessible as possible.”
Part of his sale proceeds have previously supported the Leukaemia Foundation, which sadly took his mother’s life. Currently he donates to Destiny Rescue, which exists to rescue kids worldwide from human trafficking and sexual exploitation. Kids are saved and offenders prosecuted, but so many more are ongoing victims. Wakim hopes people will see the artist in the art and connect with the inherent message.
