Breakfast club partnership improving educational outcomes for Tassie kids
NEW survey data has revealed that the Variety School Breakfast Club is making a positive impact in the classroom, driving improvements in attendance, engagement, and academic rates across twenty five participating schools.
The Variety School Breakfast Club was first established in 2022 and has continued to show improvement across a range of learning outcomes, with teachers reporting an 86 per cent increase in engagement and 52 per cent increase in attendance since its inception.
Variety Tasmania CEO, Mohammad Aldergham, said the latest survey data reinforces the importance of feeding children a nutritious breakfast to improve learning.
“A hungry student can easily disengage from learning, which is equivalent to a loss of two hours a day, or almost a full term of school,” Mr Aldergham said.
“It’s clear from our survey data that the Variety School Breakfast Club is helping Tassie kids engage with school and has led to an incredible 24 per cent improvement in academic outcomes.”
Aurora Energy partnered with Variety in May 2024, enabling the children’s charity to double its impact and expand its reach from 12 to 26 schools, allowing over 7,000 Tassie kids to access a nutritious breakfast every school day. Parents are also invited to join in, drink a cup of tea, and chat to teachers and students to facilitate communication and sense of community.
Aurora Energy CEO, Nigel Clark, said the local retailer was proud that its partnership with Variety is positively impacting student learning and supporting families who may struggle to meet their child’s daily nutritional needs.
The Variety School Breakfast Club has provided over 181,000 breakfasts over the last three years and is available in 25 schools and collages including East Ulverstone Primary.
