ULVERSTONE COMMUNITY GARDEN

‘Meet Janine – member in the spotlight’ – by Maree Gleeson

“Gardening is the art that uses flowers and plants as paint and the soil and sky as canvas”” Elizabeth Murray

The Ulverstone Community Garden is a place for everyone. No matter your ability or background, we all have special gifts to share, and if you’re not sure what yours is, come say hello – we might just help you find it! Our aims focus on caring, learning, creating and connecting.

Each month we shine the spotlight on one of our amazing garden members. This month it is Janine’s turn, a member since Nov 2024, and what a story she has to tell.

1. Tell us a fun fact about yourself:  I’m a late-diagnosed neurodivergent artist exploring intuitive abstract art through both physical and digital mediums, now creating left-handed after a stroke affected my right side.

2. What first brought you to the garden?  I was seeking a space where I could reconnect with nature, rediscover my confidence and sense of self, and be part of a supportive community.

3. Why did you then decide to become a garden member?  I loved the idea of contributing at my own pace while building connections. The garden’s inclusive environment is perfect for managing my energy and physical capacity.

4. What’s been the most enjoyable or satisfying activity you’ve been involved in so far at UCG? Helping to tend to the plants while working alongside others has been incredibly fulfilling. It’s a gentle and grounding way to spend my energy.

5. What would you say to someone who is considering getting involved but not quite sure? Take the leap! The garden is a welcoming space where you can contribute as much or as little as you’re able. It’s not just about gardening—it’s about community and feeling connected.

Everyone is Welcome at 2 Westshore Rd, West Ulverstone. Come for as long or as little time as you like.

Regular Garden Open Hours are from 10:00am-2:00pm Monday and Thursday and 3rd Saturday of each month. We also have our monthly meeting on the 1st Tuesday from 10:00am – 12:00pm.

If you would like to be part of our garden’s future and help share and shape our vision, we’d love to see you.
