This very popular event is organised by the local Lions Club and was first held in 1971. It was the idea of prominent members Laurie Kerger and Harry Davey and featured Santa being escorted in the back of a ute through the Main Street. Since its inception, the parade has grown to become the major community event for the year, attracting locals from throughout the wider district. Being the first of the Coastal parades, many visitors from along the Northwest Coast attend.
The Lions Club of Penguin had its Charter meeting in 1962 and has provided ongoing support for the community over the past 62 years. A Leo Club was formed in 1971 to cater for younger members. Some of the many local events organised by the club include – The 70’s and over luncheon, Carols by Candlelight, the annual Men’s Breakfast, a Women’s Day Morning Tea, the running of the Op shop plus regular garage sales. As with all community organisations, new members are most welcome to assist with the club’s various functions which benefit the local community.
