On par for a great future – Jenny Rowden

Rising star, junior golfer Lachie Trevarthen was the only Tassie to compete in the U.S. Kids Golf tournament at Yass Golf Club in NSW recently and achieved an impressive 3rd place! Just 9 years old, and a student at Penguin District School, he plays golf most days of the week with adults at the Ulverstone Golf Club and also the Seabrook Golf Club. Lachie says: “I’ve tried cricket and football, but I like golf best because I can play with my dad – I have beaten him already.  (Something he’s proud of). This competition was hard because it was 34 degrees, and I drank lots of water. There were also lots of kangaroos on the fairway. I felt happy getting my medal. I want to get my handicap below 20 this year. I would like to try out the golf course in Augusta, Georgia one day, and play Masters Golf – – – a prestigious event on the PGA tour, eventually.” Lachie has little opportunity to play golf with his peers in Tasmania due to a lack of Junior competitions.  This requires him to go to the mainland to test his skills within his own age bracket. Four organisations helped with costs: Target Golf at Forth, Golf Northwest, Birdies Pro Shop at Seabrook and Alpha Electrics & Water.  Generously, The Penguin Community Op Shop Committee also gave Lachie financial support from the funds they raise to help with travel expenses. Op Shop President, Lennice Wilson, met Lachie, always happy to help young people on the Central Coast achieve their goals.
