How would you react if your grandmother’s ghost who has a vendetta against a local (maybe shady) businessman haunted you?
Jess needs to stop her grandmother haunting her, while looking for a job, and deciding whether to come out to her parents and join her girlfriend in Singapore. The topics of family, navigating an unfamiliar cultural environment, respecting traditions, and the difficulties of being queer and not knowing how you family will respond, are all well addressed in this book. Jess is a sympathetic character, and you feel for all the drama she has to put up with while trying to help her grandmother pass on.
An enjoyable read about Malaysian mythology, finding oneself in a new environment, and the struggles immigrants face when they leave their home and return to the country they left.
